The trip was long but at least they had jobs to go to and somewhere to live even if it was small. They each had one suitcase half filled with clothes and a life they were leaving behind. Once they were left in the by the side of a dusty road on the outskirts of a small country town Barbara walked with Ian to their new home, unconsciously holding onto his hand as she had done so many times before. Their real estate agent waited at the door of their new home to hand them a set of keys. He wished the newly weds ever lasting happiness then left them to it.

"It seems I've missed my own wedding," Barbara said with a sigh as she put the suitcase down in the middle of the almost empty lounge room and chuckled a little. She was tired and felt dirty from all their traveling.

"I am." He'd been poking around the lounge and kitchen and thinking that they'd need to register at the library, so they'd have something to read.

He pocketed the key, once they were both outside and the door was locked, and then Barbara's hand. "It's nice and quiet here." Hardly any traffic and no Daleks, or anything else trying to kill them.

"I keep expecting Daleks to jump out of nowhere or someone to tell us that we're tresspassing and have to go to prison, or that we're in the wrong time." Barbara let their arms swing a little between them as they walked. "It's unusual to be somewhere completely safe."

He nodded. "It's relaxing. We don't have to be worrying or looking over our shoulders. And there's nothing here we don't understand."

"Relaxing is a good word to use," Barbara replied. "I hope it stays relaxing for a while yet."

The good thing about now living in a small town was that everything was so close. They rounded a corner and could see a small general store at the end of the road. It was painted white like most of the houses surrounding it, and a few people loitered around the front. They looked up as Barbara and Ian approached.

"Afternoon," one of them said with a nod of their head.

"Good afternoon," Barbara responded with a small smile and stepped into the shop with Ian.

The shop was empty, aside from the shopkeeper, who greeted them both. "Just passing through?" he asked.

Ian stepped over to talk to him. "No, we've just moved here. I'm Ian Chesterton and this is my wife Barbara." It felt like an odd thing to say, but they'd got used to it with the estate agent, so he didn't hesitate over it.

She stepped forward. "Hello."

"Well it's a pleasure to meet you," the shop keeper said and offered a hand to shake. "I'm Dan and my own wife is out the back. She cooks all of our cakes and pies you see?" he gestured at the glass section of the counter where a modest array of baked good sat for sale, "and our two boys and daughter are out playing by the lake."

((OOC: huh. Could have sworn I'd seen white houses in a country town. Maybe it was a different part of Europe.))

"Lovely to meet you." Ian shook Dan's hand. "Those cakes look good."

Dan chuckled. "They're very good. You should buy them to eat when you've finished shopping."

((They have painted houses in various countries in Europe. And they do here, but generally big houses 100+ years old))

"We might," Barbara said and looked up at Ian, hoping that she looked like a wife silently pleading with her husband.

Dan laughed. "I'll tell you what, if you're happy to share I'll let you have one slice on the house. You'll eat it and be back for more, I promise you that!"

"Thank you, that's very kind." Ian smiled broadly at Dan. "Let's see what else we need first, then we can take the slice home for a treat." He smiled back at Barbara.

Barbara nodded and walked around the little shop as they picked up things together. Their shopping consisted of the usual things; tea, vegetables, fruit, a little meat.

"Now I have to remember how to cook," she whispered to Ian and giggled a little.

As they approached the condoms, Barbara became preoccupied with soap while Ian found something in his size. She pretended to be stuck on whether they required lavender smelling soap or the rose kind until Ian returned to her, then she promptly dropped the lavender soap into the basket (whilst trying to cover up a sneaky glance at what Ian chose), then moved on.

It wasn't like there was a great deal of choice and Ian just picked up the standard size. They did stretch after all. "I think that's everything, isn't it?" He looked through what they had. It seemed like everything they'd need in a house, and for them to eat for a few days.

"Seems that way," Barbara replied. "We should have written a list."

She pushed the trollu back to the register where a pice if cake was boxed up and tied with ribbon.

"I thought it might be more fun to make it a surprise," Dan said.

They paid for their things, said goodbye and left for home, sharing the load between them.

"I think that when we put this all away, we need a big cup of tea."

"That'll be good," he said, with feeling. "I've missed being able to drink tea. And eat proper, ordinary food."

"I'll make you some tea and we can share that cake," Barbara said and leaned upwards to kiss his cheek before he pulled out their keys. She smiled and blushed a little. "We could even cuddle in our pyjamas afterwards like a real married couple."

He smiled back. "Maybe we could." He moved his bags over to one hand so he could get the key out and open the door. "I'd like to try out the shower as well," he said, once they were inside. "Now that we're settled it'll be good to wash all the travelling off."

"Well, why don't you do that, I'll make tea and find something to listen to on the radio?" she offered.

Barbara walked into the house and placed their shopping in the kitchen then turned to face Ian. "Want to help me find a place for everything?"

"It shouldn't be too hard, there aren't many cupboards." Ian went round and opened them all, to see which had crockery and pots and pans in. It was something they were going to have to agree on, though and he hoped they could. "Things we'll use most often at the front and things we'll use less often at the back," he suggested to start with.

"I think that's meant to be a pantry," Barbara said and began to put their tea, vegetables and odds and ends in it. "What else is there?"

Ian had a look in the their bags. "I think the tinned things should go in here." He indicated a cupboard that was low down and started putting the tins in there.

Barbara watched then filled the jug and turned it on. "I'll put our cleaning things under the sink and you can take all of our soap and toothpaste into the bathroom while you have a shower." She passed him the bag.

"All right." He kissed her on the cheek. "I won't be long."

While he was in the shower he thought that he and Barbara were living more like two people who happened to live together than husband and wife. Which was because they weren't married, but they were going to have to find a way to work towards that. Perhaps cuddling in their pyjamas would be a start.

Not long later he came back downstairs, hair still damp. He smiled at Barbara. "Thank you for making the tea."

"You're welcome," she smiled in return and picked up his cup to pass to him. "Let's get comfortable in the lounge."

He took the cake as well, to make sure he got some, and he set it down on the coffee table. He untied the ribbon to see what the cake was. "Ooh, chocolate cake, my favourite."

Barbara brought forks and passed one to Ian. "You have the first bit and give it a rating out of five stars."

He did and looked for a moment like he was in heaven as he ate it. "Definitely five stars," he concluded. "You should have some." He had a sip of his tea, as otherwise he'd just eat the whole slice of cake before Barbara could get to it.
